Dayton Avenue Elementary School certified as a Common Sense School Recognized by Common Sense Media for Teaching Digital Citizenship

Media CenterMANORVILLE, NY – Common Sense Media, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology, has certified Dayton Avenue Elementary School as a Common Sense School for educating its students to be safe, smart, and ethical digital citizens.

Dayton Avenue Elementary School has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to use the immense power of digital media to explore, create, connect, and learn, while limiting the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying.

“We applaud Dayton Avenue Elementary School for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” said Rebecca Randall, vice president of education programs for Common Sense Media. “Dayton Avenue Elementary School deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”

Dayton Avenue Elementary School has been using Common Sense Media’s innovative and research-based digital literacy and citizenship resources in the library media center with Mrs. Marone, which were created in collaboration with Dr. Howard Gardner of the GoodPlay Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to Internet safety, protecting online reputation and personal privacy, what to share and what not to share, managing online relationships, and respecting creative copyright. The free resources are currently used in more than 65,000 classrooms nationwide.

“We're honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” said Mrs. Marone, the school’s library media specialist, who is also one of ten digital literacy certified educators in the state.  “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them unlimited opportunities to maximize and personalize their learning.”

Library Media Specialists Present at Local Conference

On Friday, March 14th Library Media Specialists from Dayton Avenue School, Erin Marone and Lisa Martinez, from Eastport Elementary School presented at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library Liaison Meeting.  Mrs. Marone and Mrs. Martinez presented their work on implementing A Four Square Rotation to teach content in lieu of or in addition to using a traditional textbook.  The students visit four different centers utilizing resources from the media center and then complete a product of their choice.  This project is a great example of the Library Media Specialist integrating research with the classroom teacher.  Mrs. Marone and Mrs. Martinez presented to a packed house.  Great job!

Rockin’ science

On Monday, March 3rd, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Voss’s science classes were treated to a visit by parent and geologist, Mr. Rocchetta (children Emma and Grace) to kick off our unit on rocks and minerals. Mr. Rocchetta brought samples of fascinating rocks and minerals from around the world to show the children. He taught them about how these objects are formed, used and relate to our everyday lives. He also shared stories about how his job has taken him to interesting places across the globe searching for these minerals. The students were able handle the samples and ask questions about the topics. Everyone enjoyed the visit thoroughly. Mr. Rocchetta’s had some excellent parting advice for the children and that was to find something they love and pursue it as a career.

PBIS Principal's Helper

Students get recognized in our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system (PBIS) for demonstrating Safe, Honest, Accountable, Respectful, Kind, and Successful behavior.  One of my favorite rewards is Principal's Helper.  Recently, Breanna Dierlam helped keep Dayton Avenue School running.  We congratulate all our students who are working to make Dayton Avenue a warm and inviting school.  Keep up the good work.

2014 Science Fair

I have to say that the quality and rigor of the projects although excellent last year, continue to improve.  I believe that our collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory in grades five in six will benefit our students as they move through their educational careers.  Ultimately, learning and life is a constant pursuit of inquiry and knowledge.  There is no better way to deepen our understanding of the natural world then the Scientific Method.  I want to applaud all our participants for doing a great job. Below is a list of the 2014 Science Fair winners:

Mrs. Marone and Mrs. Zambelli Introduce 4th Grade Book Club

Mrs. Marone and Mrs. Zambelli have introduced a Book Club to boys and girls in 4th grade.  Students are engaging in meaningful dialogue and fostering what will become a lifelong love of books.   Titles read by students include The Skeleton Man and Little House in the Big Woods. A new group of students recently selected new titles to read.  This is a great initiative started by these two dedicated teachers.
