Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Fine's Class 2016 Souper Bowl Champions
The official Souper Bowl Champion ceremony took place at Dayton Avenue School following a few delays. We convinced Mrs. Arroyo, last year's champion to relinquish the trophy. Representatives from Mrs. Arroyo's class last year, Mrs. Arroyo, Dr. Christie, and the coordinator of the Souper Bowl, Mrs. Orlando participated in the ceremony. Students from Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Fine's class take a photo with their new hardware. We congratulate them for making a difference in their community. Over 4600 cans of soup and other non-perishable food was collected in just over a week.
Dayton Avenue School March Madness Reading Competition
Move over NCAA Dayton Avenue School has their own March Madness Reading Championship. Students are competing in a number of ways with one another. Students tally their reading minutes each night on a log which is collected every morning in March. The winning class each week participates in a basketball shoot-out in the gymnasium to earn extra points. Students, caught reading by members of the March Madness Committee receive a "Get Caught Reading" ticket that allows them to earn additional points as well. Lastly, we have weekly themed challenges that allow students to earn points for their class that include: College Shirt Day, Disney Day, Inside Out or Backwards Day, Crazy Sock Day, Western Day, Formal Day, and Sport Jersey Day! Dayton Avenue School is alive with a passion for reading. Keep up the good work.
6th Grade Students Celebrate Pi Day
Students in Mrs. Smith's class celebrated Pi Day with a hands-on activity outside. Students applied the mathematical principles associated with Pi in collaboration with one another.

Mrs. Smith Class Learn Life Lessons from Jackie Robinson
Students
in Mrs. Smith’s class are learning about Jackie Robinson as a role
model and the qualities he embodied. They read about his life, created posters
about different challenges he faced and as a group came up with powerful words
that described his character. Mrs. Smith is also reading the book Jackie's Nine to the class. As a follow
up, each child will choose a word that is meaningful to them and write about
it.
The Great Potato Race
Students in Mrs. Gottschalk's class utilized the scientific method as well as their understanding of simple machines with The Great Potato Incline Plane Race. Students made predictions and observations on what variables make for the fastest potato. Unfortunately, Dr. Christie didn't win the race.
Mrs. McGuire's Class Develop their Interview Skills
Students in 4th grade are immersing themselves in writing as we introduce our new curriculum. The integration of technology into the classroom has increased the rigor and improved student outcomes. Mrs. McGuire taught students how to write a headline and develop a transition sentence for questioning during this mini-lesson.
Mrs. Gottschalk's Class Design Dayton Avenue Flags
Students in Mrs. Gottschalk's 3rd grade class deepen their understanding of community in social studies by designing Dayton Avenue School Flags. The Dayton Avenue flags represent the Safe, Honest, Accountable, Respectful, Kind, Success expectations embedded in our PBIS system.

Mrs. DuTot's Class puts on their Writing Glasses for Reading
Students in Mrs. DuTot's class hone their writing skills by reading through the eyes of the writer. Mrs. DuTot uses the "Reader as Writer" glasses to help students focus on the art of reading to improve writing.

Pillow Talk in Mrs. Defeo and Mrs. Orlando's Class
3rd grade students shared their love of reading with family members during Mrs. Defeo's annual "Pillow Talk." This powerful event reminds students and families of how powerful the act of reading together can be. Not only are students developing a love of learning they are also fostering a commitment to family time. I want to thank Mrs. Defeo and Mrs. Orlando for inviting me to participate.

4th Grade Narrative Non-Fiction
Students in 4th grade are developing their craft as writers. Faculty and staff have worked with Sarah Cordova, a regional writing consultant to transform our writing curriculum. We are also leveraging technology to enhance the rigor of our writing.
4th Grade Students Examine Scientific Method Cookie Monster Style
Students in 4th grade put their understanding of the scientific method to the test. Each class removed a different ingredient when making a batch of cookies. Students made predictions, observations, and discussed their findings as a grade level.
Mrs. Montreuil and Mrs. Skimore's Class Give a Hoot and Kahoot!
6th grade students in Mrs. Monteuil and Mrs. Skidmore's class participated in a unit review of their weather unit utilizing Kahoot. Students worked together and reviewed concepts by leveraging classroom technology. Even Dr. Christie took part in the review. Although Dr. Christie didn't win he was able to give lunch detention to everyone that scored higher then him. In other words, the entire class had lunch detention. Keep up the good work.
