Move Over Elf on the Shelf!
The Elf on the Shelf is not academically rigorous enough for Mrs. Smith's 6th grade Science Class. The boys and girls have their very own Einstein on a Shelf. Each Day Einstein stretches the minds of the students, challenging them each day with a different question. Students are certainly enjoying themselves. Dr. Christie himself has an Einstein tie he wears to school. When asked about the tie he refers to the tie as part of "The People I am Not Collection." Boys and girls, keep up the great work.

Avenger Turkeys

No Shave November
Students at Dayton Avenue School raised over $700.00 for the American Brain Tumor Association in their 2nd Annual No Shave November assembly. Thank you to Mr. Weiss for coordinating the event and Mr. Longo, Mr. Vignona, Mr. Dippel, Mr. Eaton, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Gottschalk, Mr. Litto, Mr. Edwards, and Mr. Covas all lended their beards to support a great cause. 6th Grade Topography Map Lab
Students in Mrs. Montreuil, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Skidmore's class worked simultaneously on a Topography Map Lab. Students took a hands-on approach constructing their clay mountains and completing the mathematical and scientific steps to design contour maps.

Demonstrating Kindness
4th grade student, Hayden Sickles demonstrated kindness in support of our PBIS and Leader in Me initiative. Hayden presented Dr. Christie with a ghostly lollipop. The ghost is currently in Dr. Christie's office, not sure how long it will last before Dr. Christie has to find out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a ghostly lollipop.
Early Voting Started At Dayton Avenue School
Early voting has begun at Dayton Avenue School as the 5th grade has sponsored a school wide Presidential vote. Students have been educated on the electoral process and the importance of voting in a democracy.
Mrs. Smith's Class Completes Halloween Lab
Dr. Bludengutz (aka Mrs. Smith) completed a hands-on science lab with her students. This collaborative integrative experience deepens students understanding of the scientific method in an engaging way.

Mrs. Arroyo utilizes Google Classroom in Readers Workshop
Students in Mrs. Arroyo's class utilized Google Classroom following Mrs. Arroyo's mini-lesson on character traits. The essential question was "What are the Character Traits in a Leader?" Students worked collaboratively and shared their responses aloud. Students watched an EdPuzzle video on the life of Rosa Parks and answered the questions provided. Mrs. Arroyo utilizes this data to assess what students know and still have questions about.
Mrs. Breheny and Mrs. Scanlon in Readers Workshop
Mrs. Breheny and Mrs. Scanlon facilitated a Readers Workshop the included two guided reading groups and students working independently in EdPuzzle through their Google Classroom accounts. Mrs. Breheny facilitated a guided reading group on the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King. Mrs. Scanlon facilitated a guided reading group that examined Author's Purpose. Students worked independently in EdPuzzle to learn about the Civil Rights Movement.
Mrs. Campbell's Class Gets Ready for the Day

Mrs. Rubin works on Sequencing in Readers Workshop
Students in Mrs. Rubin's class collaborated with one another during a sequencing activity. Following the mini-lesson students worked independently and in guided reading groups.
Figurative Language in Readers Workshop
Mrs. Kerins facilitated a lesson during Readers Workshop on the use of figurative language. Technology was integrated and students worked collaboratively to deepen their understanding of how and why and author uses similes and metaphors.
Dr. Distributive Performs Mathematical Operation
Dr. Distributive (a.k.a Mrs. Orlando) and her nurse, Mrs. Van Tronk performed a mathematical operation as they worked with 3rd grade students on developing an understanding of the distributive property. Based on formative feedback through out the lesson the operation was a 100% success.

Mrs. Castoro and Mrs. Castranova's students examined the anchor text Destiny's Gift and an online informational text discussing Global Youth Service Day to integrate our Service Learning initiative into the context of Readers Workshop. Students made text to text and text to self comparisons throughout the lesson.

The Sunken Meadow Experience
Students in 6th grade participated in the Outdoor Environmental Educational Science experience. This trip not only provides students with hands-on science experiences and nature hike it also includes a team building component for our students as they develop their team and community identity with one another.

Dayton Avenue School Open House
The Dayton Avenue School Open House was a celebration of learning and teaching. Faculty and staff in grades 3 through 6 shared with families the wonderful academic and social/emotional journey we are going to take this year. We were joined by members of our Board of Education, South Manor PTA, and Special Education PTO. It was a great evening.
Utilizing Technology in Social Studies and Building our Literacy Library
Mrs. VanTronk, Mrs. Castoro, Mrs.
Orlando, and Mrs. Castranova's classes are incorporating technology into our
informative and formative assessments in Social Studies. The students are
completing an interactive continents and oceans assessment which not only
provides instant feedback, but allows or differentiation within the
assessment.
Also, students are choosing leveled
books based on their interests from our literacy library. The students
will then be broken up into literature groups, to allow for the opportunity to
discuss the book that they have chosen with other students that may share the
same interests.

Honoring Patriot Day at Dayton Avenue School
Boys in girls at Dayton Avenue School along with faculty and staff honored America by wearing Read, White, and Blue this Friday. Students in 3rd grade sung God Bless America and children in 6th grade did a writing response to Philippe Petit's 1974 walk across the World Trade Center. Other student read and responded to 14 Cows for America and FireBoat: The Story of the John J. Harvey. It with a great sense of pride that I get to work with this remarkable faculty, staff, and students.
