Mr. Vignona and Mr. Hartman Welcome Students with Holiday Music


As students arrive to school the week of December 16th through the 20th they are greeted each morning by band directors Mr. Vignona and Mr. Hartman.  Despite the weather, each morning the sweet sounds of holiday music are in the air as students get off the bus.  Enjoy the video below.

Dayton Avenue Supports Stuff-A-School and Holiday Door Decorating


Adopt-A-Platoon and Food Drive

Dayton Avenue School is supporting the Junior-Senior High School's Stuff-A-School project for the second year.  We are supporting local families through a gift drive, a food drive, a clothing drive, a pet food and toy drive, and adopting a military platoon.  We take great pride in being able to give back to the community.  Enjoy a visual tour of our Stuff-A-School project and the Holiday Doors of Dayton Avenue School. 6th Grade Visits Brookhaven National Laboratory

On Dec 3-6, the sixth grade classes from Dayton Avenue School and Eastport Elementary School, visited the Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) to experience their Science Learning Center.  During the day, the classes attended three different “exploration labs."  
The first was “Nowcasting” Cloud Formation Lab.  Through interactive models and demonstrations, the students discovered through predicting, estimating, measuring, revising, and record keeping- What is a cloud and how it is formed?  What is the role that aerosols play in cloud formation and why they are so important?
This activity correlated exactly to our curriculum at this time, since in science we are covering Weather and in Math making comparisons to form percents and ratios.

The second lab was “Graphic Exposure: Clouds and Solar Energy.”  In this lab the students recorded, graphed, and analyzed how clouds affect solar energy outputs.  The students used a laptop computer to answer a research question about clouds and solar energy by visually representing and comparing data. This activity reinforced their graphing and analytic skills.

The last lab was “Solar Energy Lab.”  The students explored the properties of photo voltaic panels.  They experimented with a variety of materials to determine which are ideal for transmission, absorption, and reflection of solar energy.  The students learned how to use instant thermometers and volt meters.  We have discussed solar energy and how it relates to weather.  In the second half of sixth grade, we will be discussing Alternative Renewable Energy Resources and their importance to our future.

These labs were very informative as well as thought provoking for our students. The staff was professional, patient, and interesting.  They discussed their individual topics by finding out what the students knew and the questions they had.  Each lab used multi-sensory instruction.  The instructors not only talked about how BNL is a great resource for us to use, but the opportunities for different professions that might interest the students in the future. They explained how they can become involved in research projects and even do internships once in high school.  It was a very full day of learning and was worthwhile since it mirrored the sixth grade science curriculum.

Mrs. Marone's Students Learn the Meaning of Thankfulness

Mrs. Marone's fourth grade students in the media center this week are doing expository writing to explore intrinsic things they are thankful for. We are starting off with a poem and an eBook on the smartboard followed by turn-and-talk discussions. The students will be using a graphic organizer and working on including both a topic and concluding sentence and using transition words in their paragraphs. They will be showing evidence or details to support what they are thankful for. It will be a quick read/write in the media center to connect with our literacy initiatives as well as American culture.

Ms. Puglissi's 3rd Grade Students Make Thanksgiving Harmony and Support PBIS

Third grade students from Ms. Mohr's class wrote their own Thanksgiving Day song with their music teacher, Ms. Puglissi.  These students also performed for the entire school as we celebrated the culmination of our "Dayton Cares" Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Ms. Puglissi's class recently updated their bulletin board to support our PBIS initiative.  Below are the lyrics and a video of the children performing:

Mummifying "King Cluck Tut" in 6th Grade Science

Last week, Mr. Dippel’s Class and Mrs. Montreuil’s class mummified a chicken Mrs. Grieco showed both classes a demonstration on the entire process from embalming to mummifying. The students were able to watch the process. This entire process will take 70 days and will end with the revealing of “King Cluck Tut’s” Body and wrapping of the body.  Students will be making amulets to bury with the body as well as building a sarcophagus and pyramid to lay the body in.  This week students are mummifying apples – using different types of salts (natron) to see which salt preserves the apple the best.
