Mrs. Defeo's Class Celebrates Thanksgiving

Students in Mrs. Defeo, Mrs. Orlando, and Ms. Lucia's class invited parents in for a Thanksgiving feast.  However, before students and families shared a meal together they had to do some heavy lifting as the examined how an author gives characters various traits.  Students had to provide text evidence to support their conclusions.

6th Grade Building Team Capacity

The 6th grade students at Dayton Avenue School are beginning to carve out their own team identify.  We are pleased to introduce the Bull, Megalodon, and Hammer Head Sharks. Teaming is a crucial component to building middle school capacity.  Dayton Avenue is spearheading an initiative to develop middle school program components for students in 5th and 6th grade within an intermediate school setting.

Dayton Avenue School Honors Veterans!

Students at Dayton Avenue School honored Veterans Day with a morning tribute that included a beautiful song played by our Dayton Avenue School All District chorus.  Throughout the day students completed "Holiday for Heroes" cards sponsored by the American Red Cross.  Over 6.5 million cards are delivered by the Red Cross each year.  530 of those cards will be from Dayton Avenue School.  Dr. Christie had an amazing day as well.  Students delivered a chart paper card thanking him for his service in the United States Navy.  We have an amazing group of young men and women at Dayton Avenue School.

Students in Mrs. Luka's Class Raise Monarch Butterflies

Tom and Dee Muller supported a partnership between the home and school as they volunteered their expertise as they taught students the evolution of the Monarch Butterfly.  Students had an opportunity to see the development of the butterflies.  Today, Mr. and Mrs. Muller's grand daughter,a member of Mrs. Luka's class, on her birthday, set the butterflies free as they begin their southern migration.  This was a great team building and learning experience for all involved.

Professional Development Day

Teachers in grades 3-6 had the opportunity to work with trainers from Microsoft as we roll out Dell 2 in 1 laptops for our students at Dayton Avenue and Eastport Elementary School.  We are looking forward to maximizing the use of instructional technology to support the academic growth of our students.

6th Grade Hammerhead Sharks Earn Luncheon

Dayton Avenue School is supporting the transition of our 5th and 6th grade boys and girls into the "tweenage" years of the middle school child by introducing middle level program components in 5th and 6th grade.  Ultimately, this will support our students in their transition to the Junior-Senior High School.  We now have three teams in sixth grade.  The Bull, Hammerheads and Megalodon sharks.  The three teams held a fundraiser to support the end of the year luau.  The Hammerheads raised the most money and received a Subway luncheon.  Each of the teams are participating in activities this year to help build their team identity.  We are looking forward to some great things.
