Mrs. Voss's Students Take the Pyramid Challenge

Students were asked to build  the tallest tower they could in eight minutes. Each group was given Dixie cups and index cards. We discussed working together, communicating and positively speaking/ encouraging to each other. If the tower falls they needed to plan again and rebuild. The team with the tallest tower after 8 minutes wins. Students completed a T-Chart following the activity identifying things the experienced and observed and how the activity would help the classroom environment.

4th Grade Team Building in the Library Media Center

Fourth graders learned about Stephen Covey’s habits and focused on the two new words on their media center word wall (proactive and synergy.) Throughout the year in the media center, the students will have to synergize or work together on inquiry learning projects. To illustrate effective synergy, students brainstormed with their tables what they would create with only six pieces of foil and 12 pipe cleaners. Then in five minutes and with everyone at their table, they had to sculpt their creation. From prosthetic arms, to ships, to volcanoes, to computers, students worked together with their classmates to meet a common goal.  The students then used one of the protocols and did a gallery walk to view the other creations  before discussing how they synergized and if they had any challenges.

Mrs. McGinness and Students Build Team Capacity in 4th Grade

Students working together completed the Marshmallow Challenge in class.  This activity allows students to get to work collaboratively, think critically, and get to know one another.  Boys and girls are given a roll of tape and 20 pieces of spaghetti.  As a team they have to design and build a structure that is strong enough to hold a marshmallow.  This is a great problem solving activity.
